Importance of Scientific waste management in tackling climate change
WASTE BECOMES ENVIRONMENTALLY HAZARDOUS AND LOSES VALUE, IF UNSCIENTIFICALLY DISPOSED
In urban India MSW dumped in low lying areas occupies 776 hectare area every year, which is equal to over 1000 soccer fields every year
Waste poses a daunting threat to India’s climate. Out of the 70-million-ton waste generated every year, less than 25% is processed and balance ends up at the dumpsites or ecologically sensitive spots. This not only generates harmful gases such as methane (25X more global warming potential) and CO2, but also leads to marine pollution and particulate matter related air pollution.
In absence of traceability and proper tracking of waste, the regulators have a limited handle on the compliance. Further, people in the vulnerable informal sector, who are the key stakeholders in the waste business, often end up getting socially and financially exploited in the value chain. As a result, multiple Sustainable Development Goals are getting adversely impacted due to this problem, which will exacerbate further as the waste generation quantum is expected to grow with a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 10% in the next 10 years.
